Assembly - Machining New Components

With the new plan in mind we set out to purchase the required threaded rods, and motors.

The threaded rods came in six foot sections which would have to be cut to length and the motors would need to have the corners sanded.

Once the components were received the next stage was machining. The three components that had to be machined were the threaded rods, the support web and the motor housings themselves.

The motors:

In order to create space for the coupling between the lower layer of motors and the threaded rod the corners of the motors needed to be sanded off. To carry out this task a bench sander was used. Below is an image of the process as well as some of the partially sanded motors.

The threaded rods:

The threaded rods had to be cut to length to leave us with four shorter rods and five longer rods. In this case a hacksaw was used to cut them to the correct length then a bench sander used to clean the ends.

The web:

The web also needed to be altered to suit its new purpose. A drill press was used to drill the existing lasercut holes. The web was drilled twice, once to 1/8" then to 9/32".
